Doing Justice with Young People

In our Catholic social tradition there are what we call the "two feet" of Christian service. The first foot is doing works of direct service. The second is an often overlooked "foot" — advocacy. We need both feet active and moving if we are going to move forward in bringing to reality God's justice in our world. Doing service projects like Souper Bowl of Caring are great opportunities to engage youth in direct service, while also teaching them the tools of advocacy. But before we get too far ahead of ourselves, let's define a few terms.

We are all familiar with direct service. In fact, you do not have to be involved with youth ministry for very long to experience it. Direct service is all the ways that we help people who are in immediate need - like visiting nursing homes, helping out at soup kitchens, and collecting food donations for local food banks.

Advocacy is a little more involved. Doing advocacy means getting involved in changing the structures and systems that contribute to or are responsible for a social problem. So, lobbying your local community for affordable housing would be a way to advocate for people who are homeless. Advocacy is more involved because it forces us deeper into the social issue that we are addressing.

This year, when you do the Souper Bowl of Caring, spend some time helping your young people dive into the issues surrounding hunger. Help them find answers to these questions: Who is hungry in my community? Why do they go hungry? What can I do to change the situation? As they learn more about the issue of hunger, find ways for these young people to do advocacy. For example, when you collect food, hand out tri-fold brochures that your young people put together with some of the facts about hunger in your area and what parishioners can do to help out. Have them write letters to their local and state representatives asking them to help out in the fight against hunger.

When we involve youth in both direct service and in advocacy, we invite them to discover their role in bringing God's vision of justice to this world.
